Continuous grazing — turning animals onto a pasture and leaving them there all season — lets livestock pick their favorite plants over and over. Those plants never get a chance to rebuild the root reserves they need to regrow, so they thin out and die back, while the plants animals don't like take over the ground they left behind. The pasture doesn't get worse because of some mysterious decline. It gets worse because the same six inches of grass gets bitten off before it can recover, season after season.

Rotational grazing fixes the mechanism, not just the symptom. Moving animals through a series of paddocks and giving each one a real rest period lets grazed plants rebuild their root systems and regrow fully before they get hit again. That's the entire principle — everything else is logistics.

What "rest" actually needs to look like

A single grazing pass that removes half the leaf material and then gets 3-4 weeks to recover, depending on your rainfall and season, produces meaningfully more total forage over a year than the same ground grazed continuously at the same stocking rate. The rest period is doing the work — not the fencing, not the water system, not any of the infrastructure. If you build paddocks but graze them too fast or too often, you get none of the benefit and all of the labor.

Practical starting point for most cool-and-warm-season mixed pastures: aim for a rest period long enough that the plants you grazed have put on new leaf growth and started rebuilding height — not just turned green. Green means the plant switched photosynthesis back on. Height means it's actually recovered. Grazing on "green" instead of "recovered" is the single most common rotational-grazing mistake, and it produces most of the disappointment people report with the practice.
